Blue Morning, Volume 1 by Shoko Hidaka

(1 customer review)

At only ten years of age, Akihito Kuze suddenly inherits the Kuze viscountship after his father’s death. The family’s capable butler, Tomoyuki Katsuragi, takes over the task of raising the boy, serving as his tutor. However, the handsome and intelligent Katsuragi, well respected even among the aristocracy, remains cool towards his charge. Akihito finds himself relentlessly drawn to Katsuragi, frustrated by the distance between them and driven to discover the reasons why.

1 review for Blue Morning, Volume 1 by Shoko Hidaka

This is one of those series that are tough for me to review because it’s hard to tell how much of my opinion is actually somewhat objective and how much of it was influenced by my expectations before I started reading. In short, I really wanted to love this series, but I found it lacking.

The period drama aspect of this series is well done, so if you love period dramas, I think you’ll like this a lot. The plot is also pretty interesting, more intricate than most BL gets to be due to length constraints.

However, I have one very big issue with this series: I cannot for the life of me tell you WHY these two leads love each other.

They certainly love each other. The series makes that very clear. The story wouldn’t unfold the way it does if they didn’t love each other.

But where did those feelings come from? When did each of them fall in love? What exactly do they appreciate about each other in a romantic sense rather than a platonic one? I read all eight volumes of this, and I have no idea. We’re just told that, at some point during a time skip, Akihito fell for Katsuragi…for some reason. And later we learn that, at some point (seriously, WHEN?) Katsuragi fell for Akihito too…for some reason.

I’m willing to forgive romance stories for a lot of things. But, to me, if a reader can’t tell you why the characters love each other, the story has seriously failed. Maybe I missed something somewhere? If so, please let me know.
