Ten years ago, while still a student, Maurice stumbled across an illustration in an artist’s sketchbook that instantly captivated him. A drawing of a beautiful youth with sad, gentle eyes, an expression that spoke of love and forgiveness. Now settled into his successful career as an art restoration expert, Maurice is shocked by the sudden appearance of a young man who looks exactly like the one in the drawing. Who, in fact, insists that he is the one in the drawing… A collection of short stories by the incomparable est em.

est em’s work sits a bit outside mainstream bl, with art that might not be to everyone’s taste and stories that can be a little bit different thematically. That said, all her story collections are more than worth a read, and this one in particular has some beautiful stories set largely in Europe. The title story is excellent, but “En El Parque” is also a touching story with an elderly man talking about the lover he met during the Spanish civil war and how they’re supposed to meet in the park, and “Rasgueado” has a professionally frustrated flamenco dancer who sells sex on the side being paid to dance for the musician who performs with him at work.
If you like thoughtful stories with international settings, this is a collection to pick up.
