The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese by Setona Mizushiro

(1 customer review)

When Otomo Kyoichi’s wife starts to suspect that her husband is cheating on her, she hires a private eye, Imagase, to investigate him. However, not only does Imagase know Kyoichi from college, but he’s been nursing a crush on the man for years. Imagase gives Kyoichi an ultimatum: if Kyoichi wants to keep his cheating ways under wraps, then he has to give Imagase something in return. Imagase’s demands start with a kiss, but as the two men become entangled in each other’s lives, it soon becomes clear they each might want more than the other can give.

This (and its sequel The Carp on the Chopping Block Jumps twice) was easily my favorite BL from the last few years and one of my favorite manga in general. I love this so, so much. But it’s a bit hard to recommend to people because the characters and situations in it are…unsavory, to say the least. But if you are like me and enjoy reading about messy characters and messy drama, this is a real treat.

The story is only two volumes, but so much happens and the characters are so well realized that it feels much longer. And it is seriously one heck of an emotional roller coaster. This mangaka really has a talent for making deeply flawed characters feel sympathetic and relatable.

I wouldn’t call this a romance — it’s a drama in my opinion about two entangled characters that are both bad for each other and right for each other. Think Hannibal/Will without all the murder and cannibalism and medical malpractice.
