Liquor & Cigarettes by Ranmaru Zariya

(1 customer review)

Theo runs the town liquor store—too bad he’s a total lightweight! His lifelong best friend, Camilo, runs the cigarette store across the street, and recently, he’s been making his attraction to Theo quite clear. Unsure of how he feels about dating a man, Theo accepts Camilo’s offer of a trial run at dating, and with a little liquid courage and a lot of heavy petting, Theo sees a whole new side to his childhood friend. Will these new experiences clarify his feelings or only serve to further muddy the waters of love?

I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read from Ranmaru Zariya so far; their art style is distinct, the stories are compelling, and the smutty parts are hot.

Despite only being 1 volume, this manga is pretty dense — it genuinely feels “lived in,” if that makes sense. You can tell the two leads have a long history with each other, as well as the community they live in. The whole “childhood friends become lovers” thing is pretty overdone in BL and romance in general, but this feels like a pretty fresh take on it just because there’s a good touch of realism and emotional honesty to it.

One note: while I don’t remember there being any scenes in here that I’d consider “dubious consent,” the fact that Theo is intoxicated to some degree for so many of their sexual encounters may be uncomfortable for some readers. I also remember Camilo came off to be me as a little pushy in some instances. On the whole, I wish they checked in with each other more throughout their whole relationship trial period thing.
