I was looking forward to this one since it got a lot of attention on yabai and chill chill and I did love it! In general I like arranged marriage stories and this one was really sweet. Kaede is a great main character, I really loved his determination to make things work for him when facing a difficult situation. I think Ren’s character development was well done too, and their relationship developed in a way that felt natural and it was pretty sweet. However, a couple of things made me quite uncomfortable so it’s not a 10/10 for me. I do think some people will be uncomfortable with the premise of forced marriage, and there are some consent issues, but I think overall people who like the arranged marriage trope will enjoy this manga.

This series makes the “arranged marriage couple doesn’t get along at first and learns to gradually like each other” trope work very well with the small amount of space it has. It is satisfying to see Kaede and Ren progress from a couple not communicating to a bickering couple and follow how they eventually start to fall for each other. I feel like there was no big turning point for the “fall for each other” part, it just happened very naturally and didn’t feel too rushed although the pacing could have worked better with a longer series. I also wish there would have been more chapters where we follow them post-marriage so the readers could get a better hold of Ren’s character and the possible changes in the couple’s dynamic after everything that happened.
Kaede was a very nice protagonist to follow. I liked how feisty and determined he was, trying different approaches to solve problems in his way and not giving in to Ren’s crappy attitude.
I don’t know why I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It’s a nice solid story. No wonder it has been doing well on different BL award lists.
