The Stray by Ayu Yamane

(1 customer review)

Sabatora has been down on his luck. Needing money, Sabatora takes a break from college to work. His life changes, though, when Tsuchiya shows up like a knight in shining armor to take him out for food whenever he’s hungry. Despite (or because of) Tsuchiya’s kindness, Sabatora’s pride is hurt whenever Tsuchiya treats him and buys him gifts. How will each of them adjust as they realize their feelings are neither that of a stray cat and its owner or even just friends, but more romantic?

Another thoughtful Ayu Yamane series. The artist has talked about how much they like age gap in their BL and The Stray brings that age gap BL to life. A lot of people tend to think age gap is all about being problematic and power dynamics, but the relationship between Sabatora and Tsuchiya don’t seem to have what people complain about online. Instead, their relationship is respectful and blossoms between their mutual love towards one another. This story is really realistic and even touches on family relationships, gay marriage (or how gay couples can get “married” in Japan), and everyday life. Overall a spectacular manga with a unique artstyle that fits the unique story style.
